A Great Idea
Sometimes a move can be a great idea. My husband and I had our own little international business and we were able to get by with it. Open die forging is one of most common forging techniques for the creation of custom forgings. According to the IMW forging page, open die forging is distinguished from traditional closed die forging (or just die forging) in that the material being forged is not enclosed on all sides. In fact, in open die forging it’s typically enclosed on just two sides.
The Open Die Forging Process
The open die forging process is pretty straightforward for those familiar with forging. The raw metal is first placed in a oven where it’s heated to a red hot heat. Nearly any kind of steel can be used for forging, and there are dozens of grades of low carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel that are commonly made into custom forgings.
After the steel has heated to red hot and thus become more easily malleable, it is removed from the oven and placed on the die. For very small forgings it’s possible for a worker to use long metal tongs to remove the metal from the oven, but most custom forging are very large industrial pieces and thus it’s most common to use forklifts or entirely automated machinery to remove the steel from the oven and move it to the forge die.
The die that is used in open die forging is something akin to a gigantic anvil. Above this stationary metal block is another massive metal piece of the forge, typically weighing thousands of pounds, that is lowered onto the metal via hydraulics and used to smash and deform the metal, molding it into shape. The die head is raised and lowered as needed, and the metal itself is turned (either manually, or automatically) so the die head can continue to shape the metal.
In some open die forging processes a hammer forge is used. The concept is nearly identical to standard open die forging, except the die head that compresses the metal beats down with incredible speed and force, often as part of a forging machine that has the die head hammering continuously. The forging material is moved in and out of the hammer forge as needed. The hammer forge is thus most similar to the old hammer and anvil blacksmithing days of the original forging techniques.
