In 1990, there were very of these arouond. Americans were weary of getting their cars washed with people. Labor was cheap, and with several car washes hiring illegal immigrants and paying them even lesser than minimum wage, hand car washes were the norm. There were fewer brands of cars and people did not want to risk their cars on touchless car washes, the up and coming challenger to hand car washes.
A lot has changed since then. Year after year, illegal immigrants are being cracked down. More importantly, people have lesser time than before, they want to get in and out of a car wash as soon as possible. More people want to spend lesser and save more, especially given the current economy, and touchless car washes almomst always cost half as much as hand car washes. People have two or three cars these days and even if they want a hand car wash for their best cards, they are opting for touchless car washes for the others. The number of people that really want ONLY a hand car wash have come down dramatically.
The fact is that touchless car washes are just as good, or even better than hand car washes on average. For instance, with hand car washes, people accidentally scratch the car or break the windshield wipers somestimes. This almost never happens these days with the newer better touchless car washes.
